Biology

Teacher: Ethan Murphy

Biology is a fantastic subject for students interested in the natural world and how living things work. This subject tackles this from 4 different levels over 4 topics:

Topic 1: DNA and Proteins – as well as understanding the structure and role of DNA and proteins, we investigate genetic modification and the ethical and social consequence of being able to obtain genetic data about ourselves and others.

Topic 2: Cells as the Basis of Life – really learning the ins and outs of cells and everything they do to sustain life.

Topic 3: Homeostasis – this topic takes a closer look at human body systems and how they work together. This topic is of particular interest for those students keen on a career related to human biology such as medicine, physiotherapy or nursing.

Topic 4: Evolution – investigates the processes of evolution and natural selection and how that leads to population changes. It also considers environmental and social issues such as global warming and other human impacts, and sustainability of populations.

Pathways:

Biology can lead to further study in tertiary institutions in a very diverse range of fields. Students might choose to study a general degree such as a Bachelor of Science to gain further knowledge of a range of biological concepts. Other pathways may be in more specific areas of study such as medicine, agriculture, food processing, horticulture, medical laboratory science, physiotherapy and veterinary nursing.
