Specialist Mathematics

SACE Credits: 20

Teacher: Brock Rogers

Students of specialist mathematics gain the insight, understanding, knowledge, and skills to follow pathways that will lead them to become designers and makers of technology. The subject provides pathways into mathematical science, engineering, computer science, physical sciences, surveying, economics and commerce.

The topics that will be covered are: Mathematical induction, complex numbers, functions and sketching graphs, vectors in three dimensions, integration techniques and applications, and rates of change and differential equations.

Assessment:

School Assessment (70%)

  • Assessment Type 1: Investigations Folio (20%)
  • Assessment Type 2: Skills and Applications Tasks (50%)

External Assessment (30%)

  • Assessment Type 3: Examination (30%)

Pathways:

The subject leads to study in a range of tertiary courses such as mathematical sciences, engineering, computer science, and physical sciences. Students envisaging careers in related fields will benefit from studying this subject.

Specialist Mathematics is designed to be studied in conjunction with Mathematical Methods.
